Interested in becoming a school bus driver?
Being a school bus driver is a rewarding and demanding job. School bus drivers are responsible for driving the bus while transporting school students to and from school safely and maintaining discipline and control of the passengers.
Driving a school bus is a part time job typically consisting of 2-2 1/2 hours of drive time in the morning and 2- 2 1/2 hours of drive time in the afternoon. This allows the driver to have 4-5 hours off in the middle of the day. Our company also does a lot of summer runs and extra field trips which is available to drivers throughout the school year and during the summer.
A school bus is much larger than the average car or truck and requires a Commercial Drivers License (CDL) to operate. Each driver is required to carry a "Class B" drivers license with "Passenger" and "School" endorsements with the "Air Brake" restriction removed. Special classroom training, a yearly physical, criminal history, child abuse & FBI clearances are also required. Meyers Bus Lines, Inc. has a Pennsylvania Certified Instructor on staff to train individuals who are interested in driving a bus but do not have their CDL license.
Pay Rates Vary.
"Regular Route" Drivers:
A "regular route" school bus driver is someone who drives a regular route Monday - Friday while school is in session. This route typically consists of a morning run transporting high school and grade school students to their schools, and then returning them home again in the afternoon. The school bus is typically parked at our bus lot or at the drivers residence during the school year. Some drivers have been with the Meyers Bus Lines, Inc. family for over 35 years!
Van Drivers
Van drivers are someone who transports students is a passenger van. The driver of a van is required to have a valid Class C driver's license and must also have criminal history, child abuse & FBI clearances as well. Most vans transport "special needs" students with autism that cannot be transported on a mainstream larger bus.
Substitute Drivers: (Sub)
A substitute driver or (sub) is a driver who does not have a regular route but is available to substitute drive when a regular route driver is off work. The amount of hours (or routes) a sub drives each week can vary greatly. Sub drivers must have the same training and carry the same license as a regular route driver.
Driver Assistant: (Aide)
A driver assistant or (Aide) is someone who assists or aides a school bus driver. An aide is required on smaller buses which transport handicapped or "special gifted" students. The aide helps load and/or unload students at the pick up and drop off points and also helps maintain discipline and control on the bus. Aides are also required to have criminal history, child abuse & FBI clearances as well.
